Your On-Ramp Program No Longer Exists
We pointed you at these programs in June. Most of them have since been shut down.
Your Work May Qualify You for New Immigration Options
You’ve built systems, shipped products, and solved hard technical problems. That record may be the foundation of a U.S. Visa or Green Card case.
Manifest Law helps software engineers and technology professionals assess talent-based pathways like the O-1, EB-1, and EB-2 NIW.
Take our five-minute quiz to share your experience and goals, and an immigration professional will help you see which options may fit and what to take on next.

Welcome to today's SCALIS EarlyCareers newsletter! 🚀
Back in June we told freshmen and sophomores the same thing every career center tells them: you are too early for a real internship, so target an underclassmen pipeline program first. Meta University. Google STEP. Palantir Path. Get in, do the summer, convert to the real internship as a junior.
That advice is now wrong, and we are correcting it in public.
Meta confirmed in April 2025 that Meta University had taken its final class. There is no replacement. Google STEP was not posted for Summer 2027, and the old program page redirects elsewhere. Palantir Path and Accelerate are off Palantir's site entirely, and Palantir's 2027 internships are open only to 2028 graduates. Capital One's TEIP has no Summer 2027 posting and is now described as second-year only. Citadel Launch is gone from the programs page. UberSTAR's page was removed. Duolingo's Thrive program closed September 30 and is already behind us.
This is not a slow posting season. The cheapest thing to cut in a tight headcount year is the program that hires people who cannot start work for two more summers. So the on-ramp shrank exactly as the destination got more valuable: NACE's 2026 report puts intern-to-full-time conversion at 63.1 percent for the 2024 to 2025 class. The internship is now the hiring channel, and the thing that used to feed you into it quietly stopped existing.
Here is what to do instead, starting today.

Verify every program against the company's own career page
Almost every "underclassmen programs" list circulating right now is recycled from 2024. The post ranks well, the program is dead, and you spend three weeks preparing for a portal that will never open.
Your check takes ninety seconds. Search the company's actual careers domain, not Google's general index, and look for a live requisition with a Summer 2027 start date. If all you find is a marketing page describing the program in general terms with no open req and no deadline, treat it as closed. Dead programs almost always leave the brochure page up and quietly pull the application.
If the page has a "notify me" or talent community form and nothing else, that is also a closed program. Fill it out, then move on. Do not build a plan around it.
Know which doors are actually still open
As of mid-October, the list of live underclassmen programs is short and the deadlines are close together.
Jane Street has two: FOCUS, aimed at first-years facing barriers in STEM, closing November 15, and FTTP with a January 31, 2027 deadline. Five Rings LINK is open with January and August 2027 sessions. Morgan Stanley's Early Insights sessions run November 2 and November 5. JPMorganChase's fellowship typically opens in November. Microsoft Explore is accepting second-year students on a rolling basis the first week of each month through December. MLH Fellowship runs year-round and does not care what year you are.
Two more were open this month and are likely closed already: NVIDIA Ignite's window ended October 18, and HRT's WiTTI deadline was October 16. Check them anyway, but do not build around them.
Apply to the regular internship postings anyway
This is the part the career-center script gets wrong. The underclassmen program was never the only door. It was the door with the lower bar.
Live counts from the Summer 2027 cycle show roughly 2,715 software engineering internships posted from about 1,043 employers, and more than 22,000 internships overall from over 5,200 employers. The median program first posts around October 14, which means you are inside the peak window right now, not early for it.
Most of those postings do not say "juniors only." They say "currently enrolled in a bachelor's program" and list a graduation window. Read the actual eligibility line instead of assuming. If your graduation year is inside the window, you are eligible, full stop. A sophomore who applies to 40 standard reqs has better odds than one waiting on a program that was cancelled eighteen months ago.
Write the application like someone who knows they are early
If you are a first or second year applying to a general req, the recruiter's first question is whether you can do the work yet. Answer it before they ask.
Put a one-line capability statement at the top of your resume summary or the first sentence of your cover note:
I am a sophomore graduating in 2029. I have shipped two production projects in Python and SQL, including a data pipeline that processes about 50,000 records nightly, and I am available for a full 12-week summer term.
That confirms your graduation year so nobody has to hunt for it, proves capability with something specific instead of coursework, and signals full availability. Vague phrasing like "eager to learn and grow" tells a recruiter you have nothing concrete.
Build the credential the program would have given you
The real value of Meta University or STEP was never the summer itself. It was the brand name on your resume before you had one, which made the junior-year application easy to say yes to.
You can manufacture a version of that. MLH Fellowship gives you a structured open-source term with reviewable output. Externship-style projects put a company name and a defined deliverable on your record in a few weeks. A research position with a professor counts, especially if it produces a poster or paper. Each gives you what the program was proxying for: evidence that someone outside your school already trusted you with scoped work.
Pick one and finish it. A completed six-week project beats three abandoned ones every time.

Ask the recruiter the question directly
If you get a recruiter on a call or in your inbox and you are not sure whether your year disqualifies you, ask plainly instead of self-rejecting.
I am graduating in 2029 and the posting lists a 2027 to 2028 window. Is there an earlier-career version of this role for my class year, or would you recommend I apply to this req anyway?
Recruiters answer this one. It takes them four seconds, and it occasionally surfaces an unposted program or an internal pool you would never have found. Worst case you get a no, which costs you nothing and saves you a cycle of guessing.
The programs built to find you early are disappearing. The jobs are not. Stop waiting for the on-ramp and merge.
