Welcome to today's SCALIS EarlyCareers newsletter! 🚀
You opened a careers page this month, saw a wall of live internship postings, and felt relieved. Plenty open. Still time.
Then you looked closer. PwC's Destination CPA requisitions for Summer 2028 started posting on September 10, 2026, roughly 22 months before the internship actually starts. Ninety-two of them were live on October 2. By October 3, nearly all of them were closed. Meanwhile PwC's undergraduate applications for Summer 2027, the one you were probably aiming at, closed on September 25.
Look at the shape of that. At CliftonLarsonAllen on October 11, the board held 43 postings for winter 2027, 21 for winter 2028, and only 4 for summer 2027. At Forvis Mazars on October 3: 74 Winter 2028 postings, 31 Summer 2028, and summer 2027 down to 15 at a handful of offices. The volume has moved. The cycle you think you are in is the one that is emptying out.
This is not a story about applying early. You have heard that one. This is about something more specific and more fixable: the season label on a posting is a hard eligibility gate, and almost nobody reads it before they hit apply. Here is how to read the calendar the firms are actually running.

Read the season on the posting before you read anything else
Every one of these postings carries a start season in the title. "Tax Intern, Winter 2028." "CMAAS Intern, Summer 2028." That is not decoration and it is not a typo. It tells you which cohort you are competing for, and cohorts do not overlap.
If you are a junior graduating in 2028, a Summer 2028 posting is not for you. That cohort interns the summer before their final year, which means they graduate in 2029. You would be applying into a class you are a full year ahead of, and the system will filter you out on graduation date without a human ever seeing the application.
Before you apply to anything this fall, sort every open posting into three buckets: starts before I graduate and I qualify, starts after I graduate, and starts in a season I did not know existed. Most students have never done this exercise. It takes fifteen minutes and it changes where you spend October.
Your graduation date is the filter, not your class year
Firms do not screen on "junior" or "senior." They screen on expected graduation. Deloitte's Winter 2028 Tax Intern posting states it plainly: you must be currently enrolled and expected to graduate by Summer or Fall 2029. Recruiting for that role ended September 23, 2026.
That single line is doing more work than your GPA, your coursework, and your cover letter combined. It is usually a structured field in the application, which means it is machine-checkable, which means it is an automatic knockout.
So stop searching the word "internship." Search the season and the year. Type "summer 2028" or "winter 2028" into the keyword bar on a firm's job board. PwC literally instructs candidates to do this. You will get a completely different result set than the one you have been staring at, and it will be the set you are actually eligible for.
Winter internships are the lane almost nobody looks at
Busy season runs January through roughly April 15. That is why winter and spring internships exist alongside summer ones, and at a lot of firms they are now the larger cohort by a wide margin. CLA had five times as many winter 2028 postings as summer 2027. Forvis Mazars had more than twice as many winter 2028 as summer 2028.
These are not consolation prizes. A winter internship runs twelve to fifteen weeks instead of eight, drops you into live audit workpapers and real returns next to full-time associates, and feeds the same full-time pipeline. NACE put the average intern-to-full-time conversion rate at 63.1% last year across all industries. The winter cohort converts off that same mechanism.
The catch is the academic calendar. A January start usually means you are not taking a full course load that term. Go talk to your registrar and your advisor now, in October, not in December when the offer is sitting in your inbox with a deadline on it.

The deadline belongs to the office, not the firm
This is where people lose seats they were qualified for. These firms do not close nationally. They close by location, as each office fills.
PwC's Summer 2028 windows ran out on different days in different cities: Portland on October 11, San Francisco and Silicon Valley on October 12, the Japanese Business Network roles on October 30. CLA's winter 2028 cutoffs were just as scattered: Denver, Colorado Springs and Salt Lake City ran September 21 to October 12, Greater Chicagoland ended October 15, Minneapolis October 16, Atlanta and Nashville October 1 to 16.
Same firm. Same program. Same start season. Six different dates. If you build your plan around "PwC closes in October," you will miss by a week in the one city you wanted. Build a list by office, with each office's actual end date next to it, and apply to your top office first instead of applying everywhere at once.
If you are a sophomore, November is your door
The early-identification programs are the sophomore lane, and their windows are open right now rather than closed. Most opened in mid-October 2026 and run to roughly November 30, with the programs themselves held in late January and February 2027. Morgan Stanley's Early Insights sessions land on November 2 and November 5 and are sophomores only.
These are short, often virtual, and they are explicitly designed as a feeder. KPMG routes sophomores to Embark Scholars and its Discover and Rise events. EY runs CHARGE. PwC's student page now lists Advance, Destination CPA and Engineer Your Career.
Treat an early-ID program as what it is: a screened introduction that puts you in the room eighteen months before the requisition that matters opens. The firms are telling you, in public, exactly where the on-ramp is.
What to do this week
Open one spreadsheet. Five columns: firm, office, program, start season, actual end date. Fill it from the job boards, not from a blog post, because these dates move weekly.
Then send this to your career center contact or the campus recruiter you already met:
"I'm graduating in [month, year] and I'm trying to make sure I'm applying into the right cohort. Which start seasons am I eligible for right now, and are there offices where the window is still open this month?"
That question marks you as someone who understands the calendar. Most students send some version of "are you still hiring interns?" You are asking about cycle eligibility and office-level timing, which is the actual constraint. It gets a different answer, and often a faster one.
You are probably not behind. You are probably aimed at a year that already closed.
