Maintaining Mental Health While Interning Remotely
I’d like to preface this article with the fact that personally, I did not care about work-life balance during my internships. I was there to work and learn. I definitely sacrificed some summer trips and other opportunities, but it was important to me to throw the kitchen sink at it.
However, my internships were all in-person, and now that I am running a fully-remote company it has been significantly harder to put together a great remote internship program. There’s a lot that can’t be replicated online, so I always recommend in-person internships, but that’s not always the reality… and at the end of the day an internship is an internship!
I have seen first-hand how tough remote internships can be on your mental health. So, here's how to preserve your well-being while thriving remotely, from someone who maybe doesn’t listen to all of these tips and tricks about work-life balance 😂
1. Create Clear Boundaries
Define your workspace and set work hours distinctly separate from personal time to avoid burnout.
Slack is AMAZING but it is 24/7 open to notifications and non-stop communication, so make sure to set some time aside for yourself. Think Apple’s DND mode.
2. Prioritize Human Connections
Schedule regular virtual check-ins, maintain open communication, and proactively engage socially with colleagues.
Even better, try and do an on-site visit at least once!
3. Take Breaks Regularly
Avoid continuous screen time. Short breaks improve productivity and protect your mental health.
I love blocking 2-4 hour windows of uninterrupted work, followed by a 30-minute dog walk.
4. Seek Support and Community
Don’t hesitate to ask for help or openly discuss struggles. Utilize company resources, virtual communities, or professional counseling if needed.
Depending on the company you’re interning at, the resources provided will vary from a lot (big corporate) to almost none at all (startups).
5. Maintain Physical Health
Regular exercise, balanced diet, and adequate sleep directly influence your mental state. Prioritize physical wellness as part of your daily routine.
I spent less than ¼ of the year at home last year. The only thing that keeps me sane is at least a 5K every day.
6. Practice Mindfulness and Stress Reduction Techniques
Incorporate mindfulness, meditation, or other stress-reducing activities into your routine to enhance emotional resilience.
A 2-minute meditation and breathing exercise can do wonders, and this is coming from someone who used to be one of those guys who didn’t believe in it.
Protecting mental health remotely is vital for sustained career growth and personal fulfillment. Prioritize self-care as part of your career strategy.
