Changes to F-1 Visa Regulations
New F-1 visa rules have imposed stricter limits on how long international students can remain outside the US while maintaining their visa status. Key points include:
Students must not spend more than five consecutive months outside the country during their academic programs
This change could significantly impact study abroad plans, internships, and academic breaks
Universities with global education programs will need to adjust their curricula to accommodate these new restrictions
Debate Over Optional Practical Training (OPT) Program
The OPT program, which allows international students to work in the US temporarily after graduation, has come under scrutiny:
US Tech Workers, an advocacy group, has called for the end of the OPT program, arguing it takes jobs away from American graduates
Critics claim universities are “selling work permits instead of education”
Supporters, including figures like Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and Vivek Ramaswamy, argue the program is necessary to address engineer shortages in the US
Impact on Indian Students
The potential changes to OPT could significantly affect Indian students:
Nearly 97,556 Indian students are currently enrolled in the OPT program
OPT has been a crucial pathway for Indian students to gain US work experience and potentially secure H-1B visas

In 2023, the Washington Alliance of Technology Workers (WashTech) took legal action against the program
